James Donaldson and Sons Invest in AED Defibrillators for Sites Throughout the UK

James Donaldson and Sons (JDS) announced today Wednesday, 14th August, their recent investment in Automated External Defibrillators (AED) for all 30 of their sites throughout the UK.

August 14, 2019

James Donaldson and Sons (JDS) announced today Wednesday, 14th August, their recent investment in Automated External Defibrillators (AED) for all 30 of their sites throughout the UK.

An AED is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can potentially stop an irregular heart beat and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest, (SCA). The British Heart Foundation and Resuscitation Council, (UK) have stated that the chances of surviving a SCA diminish by 10% every minute and the likelihood of survival after 10 minutes is almost zero.

Mark Murphy, Integrated Systems Manager at James Donaldson & Sons, said

“Most people can only imagine the impact a cardiac arrest can have, but, speaking from personal experience, I understand the devastating impact on the person’s family and work colleagues. We spend a significant time with our work colleagues, we talk to them, we know their families, we socialise with them, and in line with our proud family business ethos, they become our extended family.  The defibrillators mean that we are now able to provide assistance in the event of a first aid emergency, which could ultimately be the difference between life and death. The investment further demonstrates our commitment to putting health and safety first in everything we do.”

This personal experience combined with the fact that statistically SCA’s are most likely to affect middle aged and older men (42% of JDS employees are aged 45 and over), has driven the decision to invest in AEDs at all sites.

JDS have also registered their on-site AEDs on The Scottish Ambulance and Emergency Service website, as well as Heart Safe, the UK’s leading public access defibrillator website. The AEDs are now publicly available for people located close to sites to use during working hours.

James Donaldson & Sons has announced today, Wednesday 26th June its charity partnership with Maggie’s, due to span over the next twelve to eighteen months.

Maggie’s is a charity offering free practical and emotional support for people with cancer and their family and friends through support centres built in the grounds of NHS hospitals. Support is offered to anyone that needs it. Maggie’s relies on voluntary donations to support and grow its network of Centres and to develop its unique, high-quality programme of support. The charity aims to make the most significant difference possible to people living with cancer and their family and friends.

James Donaldson and Sons have pledged to match funds up to £25,000, raised by employees across their 30 sites for the charity, setting themselves an ambitious goal of raising £50, 000 in total over the next twelve to eighteen months. The group will be working closely with Maggie’s to develop a calendar of fundraising events and activities to engage with its over 800 employees throughout the UK.

Scott Cairns, Group Managing Director at James Donaldson & Sons comments, “Every year we regularly support charitable causes at both site and business level, but we were keen to put our weight behind one charity that would be meaningful to us all. Maggie’s initial network of centres marries in well with our own locations. This makes our support of the charity local to our businesses ‘nationwide’ while supporting the local community as Maggie’s supports us.

We look forward to working closely with Maggie’s over the coming months; we are encouraging our employees to get involved in supporting this fantastic cause wherever they can.”

Maralyn Boyle, Partnerships Manager Scotland, said: “I am delighted James Donaldson and Sons have chosen us as their charity partner.  We rely almost entirely on voluntary donations to support 280,000 visits from people living with cancer at our 22 centres across the UK, so we are incredibly grateful to everyone at James Donaldson and Sons for choosing us and we are greatly looking forward to working with them over the course of the coming year.”

The fundraising campaign will launch at James Donaldson and Sons’ sites locally throughout June.
